Kathleen Costello: Maximizing brain health in multiple sclerosis through a healthy lifestyle

A healthy lifestyle, exercise, stress reduction and activities that stimulate the brain can all help to maximize brain health.

“There have been a number of studies that have looked at the effects of exercise on cognitive function, and you can measure changes; so there are improvements that we can see in cognitive function when one engages in regular physical activity. The same can be said for when people do things like quit smoking or engage in mentally stimulating activities and are consistent with those activities. There are positive changes that take place. There can also be changes in reducing stress through things like mindful meditation, where you can actually see changes, particularly in diseases like multiple sclerosis. There have been studies that have demonstrated that there's less inflammation in the brain in people who are practising stress reduction through mindful meditation.”
